The parents of Gardner Street School and the Sunset Square neighborhood group have been working for years to fight out-of-scale developments that have been proposed for the northeast corner of Sunset and Gardner. Last month, after two years of silence, the current developer has returned with a reworked set of plans. The newly proposed housing project stands at 15 STORIES!
This new building will have the entrance and exit to its parking garage right on Gardner, directly next to our carpool line, creating more traffic and unsafe conditions for our families and community. In addition, this project is on track to begin three years of construction without any environmental review, allowing the potential for our students to be exposed to a slew of pollutants and health hazards. We refuse to stand by and let this happen without a fight.
The city and state have granted many legislative incentives to housing development applicants in the last two years. They have made it almost impossible to challenge these monster projects. For example, the applicant here is requesting a project height of 181 feet as a single “off menu” incentive, even though the “on menu” incentive allows only one additional story over the zoning, which is 30 feet. YOU CAN READ MORE DETAILS ABOUT THE PROJECT IN THIS URBANIZE LA ARTICLE.
Gardner, we need your help! If you are against this grossly out-of-scale project and the requested “off menu” incentives, click this link ----> ACT TODAY --- to send a pre-populated email to the city planners and other city leaders voicing your opposition. After you click, the email will open on your screen. Please be sure to add your name where indicated in the email before you hit send, and add whether you are a resident or school parent or any identifiers and comments that you’d like.
